You know that Lil’Bit makes homemade all-natural cleaning products – but what about the packaging it comes in?

rPET BOTTLES 250ML & 500ML

When companies, like mine, choose to use rPET in their products, they provide a market for recycled plastics. Like any business, recycling facilities have to make money–if they’re not turning a profit from the materials they collect, they’ll stop collecting them.

When consumers purchase products made with recycled content, they’re sending a message to companies that they value their sustainability efforts! By creating awareness and demand for recycled products, we help solidify recycling programs and recycled goods as valuable pieces in the production process.

Recycling plastics also helps decrease the amount of plastic waste that enters landfills. Plastics in landfills take thousands of years to break down, and can leach toxic chemicals into the Earth. These chemicals can make their way into groundwater reserves, endangering both humans and animals. Plastics that “break down”, only do so into smaller pieces of plastic, which are still harmful to the ecosystems they may end up in.

Recycling not only provides a better option than the landfill, it also has the ability to greatly decrease our resource extraction. By using PET that has already been in circulation, we’re offsetting the amount of new PET that will be created.

Energy is a big part of this equation, too! Creating a plastic water bottle from 100% recycled content uses 75% less energy than its virgin counterpart. Although some energy and water is still needed to process these plastics into new forms (which is why we love reusable!), the amount is significantly less than creating first-time plastics. This translates to less resource extraction, which protects the natural landscapes where oil and natural gas are extracted. This also means that there is less carbon emitted  during the creation of new products. One year’s worth of recycling common plastics can create the equivalent energy savings of taking 360,000 cars off the road!

WHY DON'T WE USE GLASS?

Well, glass isn't as eco friendly as you may think, using a lot more energy and resources to recycle, and when dealing with slippery detergents and sprays, it's also not safe.

You can read the pros an cons of both glass and plastic here:

RECYCLABLE DISC TOPS vs PUMP PACKS

We initially used pump packs for our Gardener's Soap and Dishwashing liquid but switched to disc tops when we discovered the pump uses 13 pieces of plastic and a spring opposed to two pieces in the disc cap (right).

  • Disc caps are 100% Recyclable.

COMPOSTABLE LABELS & VEGETABLE BASED INKS

Labels printed by Australia's premier Carbon Neutral Printer.

  • 100% Home Compostable/Recyclable and made from recycled industrial paper waste.

  • Plant based, Home compostable, natural adhesive on recycled/recyclable paper backing.

  • Traditional mineral solvent based inks contribute to ever growing greenhouse gas emissions. 97% of all inks and varnishes they use are vegetable based with the key ingredients made from soy and linseed oil.

  • Low waste pumping systems deliver ink to presses, reducing waste and maximising efficiency.

  • Printer also separates a large range of materials for recycling or reuse, resulting in only a small amount sent to landfill and proactively reduces consumption throughout the whole operation undertaking many initiatives including power factor correction, voltage optimisation and lighting designed for low power usage.

HOME COMPOSTABLE BAGS, INSERTS & TAGS

100% Home Compostable. Unbleached linen/cotton drawstring bags containing our Bee Seed Bombs, Soap Nuts and Laundry Powder.

Able to be used around the house for so many things but once they have reached their end of life, cut them up into small pieces and pop into the compost bin

Plastic waste is still a massive problem with suppliers and although many are trying to find more eco friendly
alternatives, the majority of raw materials still arrives in plastics - some recyclable and some not. For example, I order calico bags for Bee Seed Bombs, Laundry Powder and Soap Nuts by the thousands, but alas each time a box arrives, each lot of 50 bags is wrapped in its own plastic bag.

This may not seem 'that' bad but when I get deliveries of around 2000-3000 bags 4 or 5 times a year it adds up to a HUGE amount of disgusting plastic, what could I do?

I've looked into alternate suppliers but the cost increase is just not viable for a small. Well I decided to simply ask what could be done. All they could say was no and then my search for a new supplier would continue, but, to my absolute joy the  supplier agreed to bundle the bags using rag offcuts!

Now I have some really useful garden ties and rag strips that come in super handy for all sorts of things :)

Sometimes, all you have to do is ask.

  • 100% Home Compostable. The tags and instruction inserts are made from recycled kraft paper and printed with vegetable inks.

HOME COMPOSTABLE LAUNDRY POWDER BAG

  • 100% Home Compostable. The ziplock containing the laundry powder to keep moisture out and are made from Non-GMO Australian Corn Starch. These bags are made using sustainably sourced plant starch and as such compost in a well-functioning composting environment just like any other plant will.

RECYCLED BOXES: (Don't expect something pretty!)

  • 100% Australian made from recycled cardboard or recycled boxes from local businesses.

  • 100% recyclable.

COMPOSTABLE INTO ORGANIC FERTILIZER PACKING TAPE

Thanks to Biogone you and I can both breathe a sigh of relief that the tape holding your parcel together is landfill-biodegradable/compostable. But, unlike many biodegradable products, this actually leaves no microplastics or fragments behind.

The tape can be recycled with other soft plastics or disposed of in the general rubbish bin.

Once disposed to landfill biodegradation is accelerated, thanks to micro organisms, approximately 90+% faster than conventional tape, producing organic matter, natural fertilizer!

HOME COMPOSTABLE VOID FILL/ BEANIES

  • Australian made from non GMO corn. You can even eat, although they are a tad bland.

  • Dissolves in water.

  • 100% Home Compostable. safe for gardens and compost bins.

  • Manufactured without water, saving precious resources.

  • ISO 14001 accredited: Systematic approach to prevention of pollution.
