Natural, untreated, Australian Red Cedar discs, measuring 4.5cm, can be used to deter moths and silverfish in pantries, wardrobes or anywhere around the home.
Made from salvaged timber the smell is OUT OF THIS WORLD, like no other cedar home product I have come across and the wood is kind of pink! Just Scentsational - see what I did there ;)
There are many similar products on the market made from Western Red Cedar which is grown in the USA and finding anything Australian Made can be tricky, especially as they usually cost way more than imports but ta-da!
Considered a sustainable timber when sourced from managed plantations or recycled/salvaged stocks and of course mine are FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) Certified. As a timber, it also has a low carbon footprint, acting as a carbon sink during its growth phase and contributing to lower greenhouse gas emissions.
The wood contains natural compounds (thujaplicins) that act as pest deterrents (moths, silverfish etc). Once the scent starts to mellow, just give them a quick rub with fine sandpaper and the natural scent will return.
You can also pop a few drops of essential oils into each disc but be sure to let the oil absorb fully and only place on the top of the ring to avoid contact with clothing.
Directions:
For wardrobes:
Place between 2 - 5 cedar discs on hangers (see pic) ensuring they are not covered by clothing or in direct contact with clothing.
Drawers:
Place 2 cedar pieces inside, preferably between paper or in a reusable cloth bag to protect clothing from natural oils.
Although naturally scented, it's great to give the wood a light rub with fine sandpaper to restore the natural scent or you may want to use your favourite essential oils - be careful to let the oils soak into the wood completely and hang oil side 'up'.
I actually spray mine with Shoo! as it contains all the good oils to repel these critters. Just lay the disc on a tea towel and spray liberally - let the oils soak in and repeat.
Fun fact - The wood is also utilized in culturing shiitake mushrooms!
NOTE: These rings are supplied in a small, cotton bag for use in drawers etc.
Sustainability is a major concern for the Australian Red Cedar, particularly in light of its history of over-exploitation. Now under protection, its logging is carefully regulated to prevent further decline and ensure the species' longevity.
